Hatch

Designing and launching a two-sided marketplace that matched early-career talent to meaningful work beyond the CV

Hatch is a seed-stage startup founded by leaders from The Iconic and Zip Co. Its mission is to help people early in their careers find meaningful work.

I joined as a product designer just before a major pandemic-era pivot, working across product experience, research, and brand as the company redefined its direction and prepared to relaunch.

Hatch problem

Early-career hiring relies on CVs that poorly represent motivation and long-term fit

Graduates struggle to communicate motivation and transferable skills through traditional CVs, while employers rely on CV screening as a primary filter for entry-level roles. For candidates with limited experience, this is a weak signal of alignment or potential.
The result is inefficiency and missed matches. Hatch sets out to redesign the hiring journey around motivations, strengths, and values, rather than credentials alone.

We redesigned core marketplace features to support richer profiles, better shortlisting, and clearer employer reviews

The product evolved into a talent marketplace centred on candidate motivations and employer culture. I led design for employer profiles, applicant shortlists, and iterative improvements to the candidate profile experience.
Working closely with founders, engineering, and data science, I ran targeted research and usability testing to validate changes before release and ensure both sides of the marketplace felt coherent and aligned.

I designed a unified, low-friction authentication system to support multiple user types and complex flow logic

The platform required a single sign-up and sign-in experience that accommodated both candidates and employers, introducing conditional paths and deep-linking scenarios.
I collaborated with engineering from early solution design through to high-fidelity prototypes, ensuring the final experience felt simple to users while remaining technically robust and scalable.
Positioning

I facilitated positioning and brand alignment initiatives to support clear messaging for launch

Following the strategic shift, I led a positioning initiative with founders and growth team members, drawing on principles from April Dunford to clarify competitive alternatives, differentiated value, and category narrative.

With foundational alignment on messaging, we were able to roll out launch materials

I developed easy-to-use templates and assets for marketing team members to roll out consistent, high quality materials, aligned with the brand.
As part of the campaign, and with a slim budget, I produced a short, animated promotional video.
