South Pointing Fish
The earliest reference to a specific magnetic direction finder device is recorded in a Song Dynasty book dated to 1040-44. There is a description of an iron “south-pointing fish” floating in a bowl of water, aligning itself to the south. The device is recommended as a means of orientation “in the obscurity of the night.” The Wujing Zongyao (武经总要, “Collection of the Most Important Military Techniques”) stated: “When troops encountered gloomy weather or dark nights, and the directions of space could not be distinguished…they made use of the [mechanical] south-pointing carriage, or the south-pointing fish.”[10] This was achieved by heating of metal (especially if steel), known today as thermo-remanence, and would have been capable of producing a weak state of magnetization.[10] While the Chinese achieved magnetic remanence and induction by this time, a similar discovery was not made in Europe until about 1600, when William Gilbert published his De Magnete.[11] - Where else?

DESIGN poop
I don’t generally post other peoples work, but I’ve seen so much awesome stuff recently, it gets me all fidgety. I’ve got some side projects in the works myself which I’m hoping I can inflect some of this excitement including a writing blog, a magazine, some work with Adam for a Skate Park, a jeweler and a builder. Plus I’m aiming to get some drawings happening.
Who needs design blog posts anyway. Looking at portfolios is self defeating in a way. Still, good to know that some designers are still enjoying themselves.
At Medium, we’ve just finished our site, which we are pretty happy with. Totally wordpressed (Luke is ninja.). Still a few things to tidy like the registration section n’ shit but that should be done as soon as Luke gets a spare minute.
Will Sweeney for Birdy Nam Nam
This is one of the best works of illustration/animation I have ever seen. Will Sweeney is just so good!
Apparently he is doing a colab colab. Can’t wait.
Inspiration, like TV evangalism for designers
I read a great speech by Paul Hawken, on Tim Brown’s blog ‘Design Thinking‘. Read it if you’re down on design… Or life.
New Zines Coming soon!
I went to the printers today. And come back with some fresh black and white prints for my next 2 zines. ‘Mak It A’ is an A4 edition of 50, and is ready to go. ‘Tick Tock Tack Tick – 2 O’clock’ is waiting on some covers, envelopes and a special supplement.
If you are a friend and want me to save you a copy, let me know.

NEWNESS
It’s Melbourne cup day. I’m down 3 bucks. Lost at E minor posted our exhibition site. This is my new look for my blog. I shall be tinkering with it but the template is pretty tight. I pulled my folio site as well because i am in the process of building a new one. Indexhibit is great, I will still use it for archival purposes but I’m building my own from scratch. Hard cod/re.
Missed the deadline.
